What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs and tissues. It allows doctors to assess their structure and identify changes without using ionising radiation.
When can ultrasound help?
Ultrasound is used to assess changes in the abdominal organs, thyroid gland and soft tissues, investigate possible causes of pain or swelling, examine a palpable lump, or monitor previously identified changes. Ultrasound of the joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles can also help assess injuries, damage caused by overuse and possible inflammatory changes.The most appropriate examination is selected based on your symptoms and your doctor’s assessment.
